AUROBINDO'S DEMONSTRATION OF R&D LEADERSHIP IN CEPHALOSPORINS

Antibiotics have emerged as a major therapeutic class in India with around Rs.3500 crore sales.

Amongst antibiotics, Cephalosporins are growing fast, and at double pace than the market, because of their proven efficacy against different types of bacteria and their unparalleled safety.

Cephalosporins are ranked amongst the top ten therapeutic classes in the world contributing to almost seven billion us dollars.

Aurobindo is a dominant player in the Cephalosporins and caters to all leading players in the world. Today it offers world’s largest product portfolio with 20 different Cephalosporins. Aurobindo aggressively reverse engineered and made available first, second, third and fourth generation sterile and non-sterile Cephalosporins. The availability of these latest generation Cephalosporins has helped the medical profession to administer more effective medicines with excellent safety profile, contributing to rapid acceptance of this class in most parts of the world.

Aurobindo's research efforts brought the best 3rd generation oral Cephalosporins like Cefixime, Cefpodoxime proxetil Ceftibuten that has ushered in a new era in the Cephalosporin usage.

Similarly Aurobindo brought the best 3rd generation injectable cephalosporins like Cefotaxime, Ceftriaxone, Ceftazidime, Cefuroxime sodium, Cefoperazone, Ceftiofur. These sophisticated products with worldwide acceptance & global quality have brought a great recognition to India.

Recently Aurobindo has brought out the Cefoperazone +sulbactum combination and Cefpirome, the first fourth generation injectable cephalosporin.

Coming hot on the heels of all these developments is the clearance by the Drug Controllers Authority of India for the Cefepime, the fourth generation cephalosporin and one of the most advanced antibiotics in the world with a true broad spectrum encompassing both gram postive and gram-negative pathogens including the deadly pseudomonas.

Cefepime will prove to be a powerful tool in the hands of surgeons and physicians who are fighting serious and life threatening infections.

Aurobindo is perhaps the second company in the world to manufacture this drug after the innovator company. Aurobindo has already started supplying Cefepime to Citadel Aurobindo Biotech Ltd (Aurobindo’s joint venture) and Alkem Laboratories. Aurobindo’s joint venture is marketing cefepime as Cefeprime. Cefeprime will be available in 1 gram and 500 mg dosage strengths.

A strong focus on the R & D makes Aurobindo one of the leading Cephalosporin manufacturers in the world with mega sterile and non-sterile API and formulation facilities.
